Tulia Dice Competition – Celebrating Traditional Games and Local Talent
Tulia Dice Competition is an annual tournament organized by Tulia Trust in Mbeya, Tanzania, designed to showcase and celebrate local talent in traditional board and table games. The event engages youth from 36 wards, promoting community interaction, skill development, and healthy competition.
Focus Games: The competition features popular local games such as Bao (Kisafwa and Kiswahili variants), Drafti (Checkers), and Pool Table, encouraging participants to master strategic thinking and concentration.
Location & Scope: The tournament is primarily held across Mbeya City, with finals hosted at prominent venues like Ruanda Nzovwe Grounds or Mwenge Grounds.
Purpose: Beyond entertainment, the competition empowers youth and fosters community engagement. Often branded with the slogan #SukumaKeteUvuteMkwanja (“Push the dice and get cash”), it provides both recognition and rewards for talent and strategy.
2023 Edition: The 2023 tournament took place in November, with competitions held at multiple centers including Ilomba, attracting enthusiasts of traditional games from across the region.
Tulia Dice Competition continues to strengthen cultural appreciation, youth empowerment, and community spirit in Mbeya.
